The Cyber Vikings are what happens when the ice shapes a people and then the ice kicks them out. They reign terror across the southern middle regions of the globe, rack up bounties that no hunter has yet collected, and refuse to be suppressed by even the android referees that police the rest of the Off-Grid dominion. They are, in every sense the network uses the word, unruly. They were also the first faction in the Off-Grid to break the inviolable social code — the ancient agreement that old people's homes and sanctuaries for gays and trans were never to be touched. The Vikings touched them. The rest of the Off-Grid has been trying to put that genie back in its bottle ever since.
Origin and territory ¶
They settled for generations in the arctic and sub-arctic north. Adapting to that land — ice, dust, long dark — forged their identity and made them hard. They used tech, traps, and forged armour to bond with bears and wolves, gave those animals cybernetic prosthetics, and turned the hunt into a family inheritance. The Huntress Sisters taught Axe Maiden how to track as a small child out of a very small settlement. Between the land of ice and the land of sand lay a great forested belt of archaic cities and villages, where for generations the Vikings fought the Black-Haired tribe in war. Eventually the Vikings retreated south into hotter and less familiar ground — where they collided with the Black-Haired again, this time hiding in isolated mountains, driven from their own home by the spread of Kafiristan.
Music and ritual ¶
Before every raid, a female singer leads with a flute. The sound is rich, old, historically beautiful — and then it tips, mid-phrase, into something barbaric. That flip is the Viking signature: something ancient and tender, twisted into something brutal.
Leadership ¶
The Viking leader sits inside a wider power-family interplay among Off-Grid houses. A highly attractive, deadly young woman rides with that family — Game-of-Thrones-but-more-Hunter-x-Hunter, a devilish household of assassins.
Why they matter ¶
The Cyber Vikings are the faction that reminds the On-Grid Society that the utopia has edges, and the edges bite. They are also a case study in what happens when a people break the one unwritten rule their neighbours had agreed to respect. After the Vikings, nothing in the Off-Grid is inviolable again.
